Putting fish back into Fish Creek

Fish Creek Catchment Project

Native fish need protection, and protection means vegetation right down to the water's edge

In 2019, interest in the Corner Inlet Project prompted the group to establish a similar waterways project on the Fish Creek, to restore vegetation, eliminate stock access and control weeds and erosion. This would ensure clean, healthy water quality for the creek and tributaries.

Fish Creek Landcare introduced the plan to the community and engaged with landowners with creek frontage to interest them in joining the project. Funding has been offered through grants from the Victorian Landcare Grant scheme, which has been shared with landowners with a project plan. 11 km of fencing has been completed and 20,000 tube-stock planted to date.

The project is ongoing according to funding opportunities and interest. We can now boast that all of Fish Creek from the headwaters on South Gippsland Highway to the township has been fenced and revegetated, ensuring a good start with clean water that flows on from Fish Creek to the Buffalo drains, the Tarwin River and onto Anderson’s Inlet.
